The COVID-19 pandemic led to widespread adoption of remote work, with varying experiences. Despite the advantages of work-life balance and flexibility, challenges in communication and collaboration emerged. A recent study by Georgia Institute of Technology, using Glassdoor data, has revealed that companies fostering employee-centric cultures with emphasis on collaboration and flexibility were more likely to succeed in remote work setups.
The researchers employed Glassdoor’s anonymous employee reviews to gain valuable company culture insights. They gathered more than 140,000 reviews between March 2019 and March 2021, aligning with the pandemic’s timeframe. Through a textual analysis of the pros and cons parts of the reviews, the researchers identified patterns and sentiments to assess the impact of remote work on company culture.
According to postdoctoral student Mohit Chandra they found positive company reviews in the pro section where words such as “flexible work” and “work-life balance” were highlighted. On the other hand organizations where there was toxic culture key words such as inclusion, equity and diversity were highlighted demonstrating that such companies engage in unethical practices and they create an unconducive environment for employees.
Researchers utilized statistical and deep learning techniques to create an algorithmic prediction task assessing pre-pandemic cultural attributes influencing positive remote work conditions. The model achieved a 76% accuracy in predicting favorable remote work environments. Company culture was segmented into seven subgroups, comprising 41 dimensions like interests, work values, and interpersonal relationships.
