I don’t know about you, but when this year’s Oscar nominations came out, I was very pleasantly surprised. Not so often do we get so many indie films at the Oscars, and this year we got plenty. But we are here to talk about all the movies that have been nominated for best picture, and we are all certainly aching to know which one will win. Since we won’t find out until March 4, we can only talk about them and give our guesses. With that in mind, let’s make some predictions!
First things first, here are the nominees:
- The Shape of Water
- Phantom Thread
- The Post
- Call Me by Your Name
- Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri
- Darkest Hour
- Get Out
- Lady Bird
I like to use the system of elimination for things like these. First of all, one movie that I am absolutely sure will not get this award is The Post. I mean, it is fun and all, but this type of movie that’s just telling a chronological story of something that happened in the past is not Oscar worthy anymore. Not in 2018, that’s for sure.
By this reasoning, I believe that Darkest Hour and Dunkirk are also not getting the award. Both are probably going to get Oscars in other categories (Gary Oldman has got to FINALLY get an Oscar and Dunkirk is bound to get one, if not more, in the more technical categories) which is why I can’t see them winning an Oscar for Best Picture.
Without getting into details as it will take too long to elaborate, Phantom Thread won’t get this Oscar either, as I’m sure many would agree. Furthermore, the chilling, can’t-place-its-genre Get Out is most likely not winning the award either, even though it probably deserves it.
After eliminating these, the remaining movies are all fair game, like the simply amazing Lady Bird and Call Me by Your Name. I’d personally like to see Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri taking this prestigious award, and it is one of the most likely ones to win as well, not counting The Shape of Water which has the most chances as the critics are just in love with this movie. This is why I have to say that I am almost positive that The Shape of Water will win the Oscar for Best Picture.
We will see for sure on March 4 and I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait!
