While both Botox and Juvederm are injectables, they are not the same and work in different ways. Botox is actually a form of a neurotoxin which relaxes the muscles they are injected into. Juvederm belongs to a treatment category called a “filler”, because it fills in the area into which it is injected. Both of these treatments help to reduce wrinkles, lines and depressions in your face.

More details about each of these are discussed below.

Botox

Botox uses a special formula made of a neuro toxin which is injected into certain muscles in your face. It relaxes these muscles, which results in the reduction or even elimination of unwanted lines and wrinkles. The injections are relatively painless and a typical treatment procedure is less than 15 minutes long.

Botox is best for treating areas on your forehead, by or between your eyebrows and around your eyes. While it is much less expensive than Juvederm, the treatment lasts only a few months and takes several days to start working.

Be aware that Botox is not advised for people over 65 or who have skin conditions on their face.

Juvederm

Juvederm is a popular injectable that is classified as a “filler”. It is a formula using hyaluronic acid and it helps to fill in depressions and smooth the skin in the area it is injected into. Most of these treatments contain a local anesthetic so it is usually painless. Juvederm treatments typically take about an hour.

Juvederm is best for treating most areas of your face that are below the eye area. It is fairly expensive, but the results are almost instant and the treatment typically lasts for one to two years. Most people over 65 can safely use this treatment.

Special Considerations

The usage of either Botox or Juvederm should only be through a licensed and appropriate medical professional, such as a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon. Since Juvederm is long lasting, be extra careful about applying this treatment.

While both of these treatments can have side effects, they rarely happen and usually are minor. However, Botox has a possible, but rare, side effect of where the neurotoxin it uses travels to unintended parts of your body – which can cause toxicity and medical harm.
