In modern times like this, there is no denying the fact that teeth whitening has come a long way in improving the overall appearance of the teeth.

What is teeth whitening?

This involves the effective methods of brightening the natural colour of your teeth with the conscious means of not removing the teeth surface. Teeth whitening is the method involved in bleaching the teeth to lighten the existing colour. Teeth whitening requires professionalism and should be carried out by a dentist or a dental professional such as a dental hygienist.

There are diverse treatment options available for teeth whitening ranging from the use of natural substances to the use of chemical substances but the commonly used method of teeth whitening is:

– The use of whitening toothpaste

– Professional bleaching

– Use of whitening gel

– Laser whitening

● Use of whitening toothpaste

This is the simplest and most commonly used method of whitening teeth. Though not as effective as other methods but can be used to remove stains and improve the overall appearance of the teeth.

There are several kinds of whitening toothpaste but our choice of toothpaste should be dependent on the presence of Fluoride which is a very active ingredient. Whitening toothpaste should be regularly used as it maintains the color of the teeth and may also help the effects to last longer once the teeth have been professionally whitened.

● Professional bleaching

This involves the use of a chemical substance that can penetrate the teeth and bleach them from the inside out. This method works by the instrumentality of a very effective chemical that must contain Hydrogen Peroxide or carbamide peroxide as an active ingredient.

For a proper teeth whitening procedure, professional bleaching should be carried out by a dentist. The dentist, first of all, protects the gum by using a gel and then the whitening product containing the active substance is being applied by using a specific tray that fits into the teeth. This is done to ensure the optimal results and equal whitening of the teeth and also to prevent the chemical substance from affecting the gum.

This method has been known to give the best teeth whitening result and it has no side effects.

● Use of whitening gel

This is another method of whitening the teeth though not as effective as the professional bleaching method. It involves the use of a bleaching gel to brighten the teeth over a long period.

It requires the dentist to take an imprint of your teeth to make a mouth guard that will fit perfectly into the teeth. Then the dentist will prescribe a whitening gel to be used at home which will be applied to your teeth while making use of the mouth guard. The whitening gel will be applied regularly over a specified period. This method is also effective but will take weeks to get the desired result.

● Laser whitening

This is also a very effective teeth whitening method which is known for its effectiveness and gives the optimum and desired results. In this case, a mouth guard-like rubber dam is used to protect the gum and a bleaching product is painted on the teeth. Then a laser is shone on the bleaching product to trigger and activate the rate of reaction of the whitening product and desired color change can be achieved quickly.

This method is a very effective and fast method of whitening the teeth as the result can be achieved in about an hour.

Conclusion

Generally, the use of whitening toothpaste has been the most commonly used method of maintaining the natural white color of teeth but this tends to get altered as a result of our different lifestyles such as smoking, consumption of sugary foods and drinks that stain the teeth.
