Crohn’s is categorized as an inflammatory bowel disease, because it causes chronic inflammation of some or many parts of the intestinal tract. It is often a chronic, progressive disease. It may be only mild and annoying in its early stages, but can often develop into a very painful and serious condition. Early and proper treatment is necessary to prevent Crohn’s from becoming a medically serious situation.

Who Gets Crohn's Disease

This disease was once thought to be at least partially caused by diet and stress. Research has shown these factors can worsen the condition, but not cause it. The single largest risk factor discovered is genetics – over 20 % of Crohn’s patients have a close relative who also has the disease. While it can manifest itself at almost any age, the majority of patients are diagnosed by the time they are 30 years old.

Symptoms

The symptoms can vary and are often just thought of as an ”upset stomach, common diarrhea or stomach bug”. It is important to take note and act on the following symptoms, especially if they are chronic in nature:

Abdominal pain and cramping; diarrhea; reduced appetite and weight loss; fever and overly tired.

The following symptoms are often a sign of severe Crohn’s and require prompt medical attention:

Blood in the stool; abnormal anal leakage; bodily inflammation; kidney stones and anemia.

Specific Pharmaceutical Treatments

Immune system suppressors, which act to stop the cause of the inflammations. These include azathioprine and mercaptopurine.

Anti-inflammatory drugs, including prednisone and budesonide.

Special anti-immune drugs, classified as “biologics”, including vedolizumab, TNF inhibitors and ustekinumab.

Other Medical Treatments

Antibiotics including ciprofloxacin and metronidazole.

Anti-diarrhea medicines.

Acetaminophen based pain relievers.

Certain vitamins and supplements

Surgery

Surgery for Crohn’s involves the removal of damaged portions of the intestinal tract to lessen the condition. Almost half of all patients with severe Crohn’s end up requiring surgery. It should be noted that surgery does not cure the disease, but alleviates immediate severe symptoms.
