Most people concentrate on the size and price of a mattress when shopping for one. However, there are many types of mattresses available and you should be aware of them to make a proper decision in getting a new mattress. Below the main different kinds of mattresses are discussed.

Innerspring - Coil Mattress

This type of mattress is very common and most often will be the lowest price kind you’ll find when shopping. Depending on the quality and quantity of the inner coils (springs), they can offer minimum to moderate body support and comfort. They are known to be somewhat “bouncy” and therefore may not be the best choice for couples sharing a single mattress.

Foam Mattress

A foam mattress provides support entirely with a foam filling and usually has no springs. There are many different kinds of foam used, with the most popular known as “memory foam” – which ‘remembers’ its original shape and will resist sagging after prolonged use. These mattresses offer good support and motion isolation, which is good for couples. If you have allergies, you should ask if the foam used is hypo-allergenic.

Latex Mattress

Latex is a type of rubber and is used as a mattress content, besides many other uses. Some mattresses use latex as only part of the mattress stuffing, while a “true-latex’ mattress uses only latex. This kind of mattress can provide very good support and durability. If you are concerned about chemicals being used in your mattress, you can get one made with natural, organic latex.

Hybrid (Combination) Mattress

This kind of mattress combines the materials used in other mattresses. They usually have two main components: an inner support system and comfort layers. The inner core is made from innerspring coils and the comfort layers from foam or latex. Besides good support and comfort, they offer low heat retention to help keep your bed cool and comfortable.

Airbed Mattress

These are not to be confused with an “air mattress” – the kind of temporary bed that you inflate when you want to use it. A permanent airbed mattress features a built-in air chamber to provide their support. These beds also have a self contained remote controlled air pump, that allows you to adjust the amount of firmness to your liking. This gives you the ability to keep ‘changing’ the exact feel of your mattress as suits you. Also, these mattresses in larger sizes allow couples to individually adjust their side of the bed.

Pillow-Top Mattress

These mattresses have a special feature of adding a very soft and comfortable top layer, making the whole top of the mattress feel like a big pillow for your body. This feature can be found on the different kinds of mattresses discussed above.

Adjustable Mattress Beds

This is the type of mattress that you can adjust by remote control – to raise and lower your head and/or your legs and feet. This requires a special mechanism built into the bed. This mattress is excellent for those who have special medical or physical needs, but is usually the most expensive type of bed.
