A driving job is a good choice for active seniors who love to drive and be out of the house. While you don’t need any degree or specialized knowledge for these jobs, you do need to be basically healthy, mentally alert and a responsible person. Of course, having a current driver’s license and clean driving record will be necessary.

Advantages Of Being a Driver

No matter what specific type of driving job you take, most of them offer the following advantages:

– Independence: Most driving jobs are as an independent contractor rather than an employee. This allows you the most control of when you work and how much you work.

– Freedom: Driving jobs have no boss ‘over your shoulder’. You manage yourself and since you’re mobile, you’re not stuck in one place for any length of time.

– Flexibility: Since there are many kinds of driving jobs available, you can try different opportunities and do different types of these jobs at the same time.

Taxi Driver

There are two basic types of jobs available to taxi drivers. Driving for a taxi company or being a “ride share” driver with one of the many of these services, such as Uber. The main advantage of regular taxi company work, is that they will usually provide you with a vehicle (although you may have to pay some sort of lease or rent charge). The main disadvantage is that in most locations you need to get a special driver’s license or permit and probably insurance as well.

Working with a ride sharing service such as Uber, you will have to use and maintain your own car. However, this type of driving does not require a special license in most locations. Also, here you are always a full independent contractor, with the most work flexibility and freedom. This is not always the case with a regular taxi company position.

Delivery Driver

There are three main types of this kind of job:

1) Package delivery and courier work: Here you deliver packages or documents to homes and offices. In most cases, you will need to have and use your own vehicle. No special license is required. In addition to local cargo and courier companies, the big national companies – such as Amazon, UPS and FedEx – often hire “freelance” drivers to help with deliveries in certain areas or during busy times.

2) Food delivery: Most of these jobs are available in bigger cities with lots of restaurants. There are many delivery services that hire freelance drivers to make food deliveries from various restaurants to local homes and offices. Again, you will need to have and use your own car and no special license is required.

3) Hybrid: You can often be a taxi driver for passengers and a package delivery driver at the same time with the same vehicle. This is especially true if you a ride sharing service driver and you can juggle taking people and small packages at the same time.

Bus Driver

Many bus companies hire seniors for driving positions. There are two types that are best for seniors, especially for those who don’t want to use their own vehicle:

1) School Bus Driver: Many school bus drivers are seniors, because it is a part time position and seasonal. You only have to work in the early morning and mid afternoon. Also, whenever there is school vacation (including the summer), you will be off from work. You will usually have to get a special license or permit for this job.

2) Private Charter Bus Driver: Not as available as school bus jobs, but often available in larger cities. These companies often hire freelance drivers as needed, especially to transport tourists or convention attendees. Again, you will need a special license.

Truck Driver

Yes, that’s right – many seniors actually are truck drivers. The trucking companies welcome eligible seniors as drivers due to the acute shortage of truck drivers in the work force. This type of position is best for the senior who wants to start a second career and a new life style. You don’t need to be a physical strongman, as many of these positions involve only driving the truck with no loading or unloading of the cargo. In addition to having a valid drivers license and a clean driving record, you will need to secure a special commercial driver’s license. There are many tuck driving schools that will help you with this and can often be done in a matter of months.
