Dangers of Chiropractic Treatment

The process of chiropractic treatment involves using the hands to manipulate the spine and some other modes of treatment. Chiropractic treatment operates on the belief that aligning the body’s musculoskeletal structure, especially the spine, will help the body heal itself without medicines or surgery. Chiropractors use the treatment for restoring joint mobility caused by tissue injury, which is usually the result of falling or sitting in the wrong positions or without proper back support.

The treatment has now evolved from the time of D.D Palmer with its widespread integration into orthodox medicine. To undergo the process of chiropractic treatment, the patient has to take a physical examination. The patient might also need lab tests to examine if chiropractic treatment is appropriate for their kind of pain.

One or more manual adjustments, in which the doctor manipulates the joints with a controlled, sudden force to enhance range and quality of motion, may be part of the treatment plan. Nutritional advice and exercise/rehabilitation are often used in the treatment regimen of many chiropractors. In addition to back pain alleviation, the goals of chiropractic care include the recovery of function and injury prevention.

Acute low back pain, such as that caused by moving furniture or being tackled, is treated with spinal manipulation and chiropractic care, which are usually considered safe and effective. It has also been scientifically proven that conditions like osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia can be improved by the type of treatment used by chiropractors.

Even though the treatment has shown side effects in numerous cases, it seems to be a better cure for back pain than NSAIDs. Some of the minor side effects experienced include muscle stiffness and soreness. This usually stops within 24 to 48 hours.

Also, before treatment, there are some ‘red flags’ which chiropractors always try to find out before using the treatment on any patient. Any patient with any of these ‘red flags are not allowed to undergo chiropractic treatment.

Examples of the red flags include patients with inflammatory arthritis, osteoporosis, spinal cord compression or those who take blood-thinning medications. Patients with cancer also need to get clearance from their medical doctor before undergoing spinal manipulation. These are the more complicated red flags. Sometimes, a red flag might just be that the chiropractor cannot handle that particular case.

While chiropractic treatment is quite safe, it has shown some side effects such as:

● A herniated disk or a worsening of an existing disk herniation.

● A particular type of stroke after spinal manipulation

● Compression of nerves in the spinal column.

While the treatment might be suitable for your condition, always make sure you obtain clearance from your medical doctor.
