These include companies that move people, such as taxis, buses and trains; plus companies that move stuff, such as trucking companies. Your main contact and interaction will be with the drivers and operators of these vehicles. You will need to make sure that they keep to an expected schedule and report to you promptly of any problems. As any problems arise, you will need to solve them as quickly as possible, for example – a truck breaks down, you will need to find another truck to complete the deliveries as quick as possible. If you have any prior experience, say being a truck driver, that will be a big plus for this kind of work.
Courier and Delivery Companies
Here, you have big delivery companies and small, local courier services. Time is of the essence in these companies, so it can sometimes get hectic and stressful. Other times it may be slow. If you have a military sergeant’s mentality and personality, it will be very helpful. You need to be prepared to bark orders at your drivers and make sure they are complied with. This type of job also often entails customer service, where you are interfacing between a customer and the driver. In smaller companies, you will often be the only dispatcher on duty, with maybe an assistant.
Emergency Services
This kind of dispatch job is of the highest responsibility – that of people’s lives. Jobs in this field include; ambulance service, fire departments, police departments, electric and gas companies. These jobs are located in all areas, as all locales need and have these kinds of services. Often, these jobs will require special training and certification. Many times you will the first person of contact for a person needing help – such as in a ‘911’ call center. The dispatcher can actually help save someone’s life. Of course, if you have prior experience in emergency services, it will be a big advantage.
Service Companies
Dispatch jobs in this area are for companies such as: locksmiths, tow truck services, food delivery companies, electricians, plumbers and so on. These jobs very often are remote where you work from home. In many ways, this job also can involve sales – where you convince the caller that your company can get the job done properly and quickly. It often comes down to how quick you can get a service person to the customer, which is in your hands as a dispatcher. This type of job can have periods of being very busy and other times of being very slow. Again, it is a plus if you have prior experience as a service person in the industry you are working for.
