Platforms For Selling Used Clothing

– ThredUP: This is the easiest to use, because they take care of everything for you – posting, collecting payment and shipping. You send them all your items for sale, in bulk, on consignment. They also charge you the most commission for this convenience.

– eBay and Poshmark: These platforms have very high traffic, but charges higher commission than the smaller sites.

– Depop and Mercari: These platforms sell almost any kind of clothing and charge reasonable commission.

– Etsy: Specializes in unique, artsy and vintage items.

What Kind Of Clothing Items Sell

– “Like New” Condition: Items that are visibly damaged or stained usually don’t sell. Hidden minor damage and stains or slight imperfections are probably okay.

– Current Styles: The type of clothing still available in major clothing stores.

– Recognizable Brand Names: Buyers are more confident in purchasing this type of merchandise.

– Novelty and Vintage Items: The type of clothing that is unique or collectible.

Good Photographs Are Important

– Photograph the item against a large and clean white background.

– Take pictures of the front, back, design details and label.

– Use a good amount of natural light instead of a flash.

– Don’t cut off any of the item in the photo.

– Make sure the item is as clean and wrinkle free as possible.

The Right Price

The sales price is the single most key factor in actually selling your used clothing items. Used clothing buyers look for and expect a bargain. Therefore, proper pricing is a simple thing to do. Price your items for at least 50% off the retail price of a comparable new item, better yet 75% off.

Shipping and Getting Paid

Most platforms will assist you with shipping by emailing you a premade shipping label, that you then print out and attach to the box you packed the items into. The Post Office and UPS have free shipping boxes available. It is highly recommended that you use a shipping method that has proof of delivery.

The platforms collect the money for you (usually via the buyers credit card) and then place the money on hold in a special account. After the buyer receives and accepts the items, the money (minus any commission) is released to you.
