How To Skip Traffic With Private Helicopter Rides

Almost all major metropolitan areas suffer from traffic jams. This is especially true during the morning and afternoon “rush hours”. In some cities, traffic jams occur almost around the clock. Because of this, drivers waste endless hours on the road trying to reach their destination.

The solution to this mess for some drivers is to commute by helicopter. While this used to be only available to the rich and famous, there are now many different helicopter services available even to the more “common folk”. These helicopter services are mostly available in large cities, where there are constant traffic jams, available air space and landing pads and enough high income residents. The cities that have the most helicopter services are New York and Los Angeles.

Some smaller cities also have helicopter commuter services, such as Portland. However, in many cities with international airports, there are airport helicopter taxi services between the airport and the local downtown / financial district.

New York City

In the Big Apple, especially in Manhattan, traffic is a nightmare. During the so-called ‘rush’ hours ( now they are really the ‘crawl’ hours), traffic jams abound in the whole New York metro region, affecting many millions of people. Due to this pervasive problem, a large amount of helicopter landing pads (many of the skyscrapers have one or more on their roof), liberal use of airspace and a large amount of people with money and who are always in a rush, there are multiple helicopter commuter services.

The most frequent use for these services are:

– Travel between Manhattan and the three metropolitan airports

– Travel between Manhattan and the nearby beach resort areas

– Travel between corporate buildings located in the metro area

Los Angeles

Greater Los Angeles has been a traffic nightmare for over 50 years now. There is a great love affair with cars and many homes have a separate car for each adult member of the family. On top of the huge number of cars, the metro area is absolutely huge in geographic size. This region is infamous for round the clock traffic jams in almost all of its areas. Thus Los Angeles, like New York, has a fairly large amount of helicopter services. Unlike New York, there are far fewer helicopter pads, therefore the majority of helicopter services start and end at a local airport. Fortunately, this region has many smaller airfields which accommodate helicopters.

The most common use of these services are similar to New York, with more activity here between the city area and the numerous nearby coastal cities and beach resorts.

Portland

Portland, Oregon actually has a helicopter taxi service. Thanks to liberal rules, including allowing helicopter landings and takeoffs in many areas, you can actually arrange for a ‘ride’ from near your home or business to another location in the Portland area. It is similar to using Uber – you order, arrange and pay for your ride online. There is also scheduled helicopter shuttle service between downtown Portland and the regional airport.

The Near Future

In the near future, helicopter commuting and taxi services will expand greatly to more cities and more people. This is due to the developing and soon to be deployed technology of electric powered, passenger carrying “drones” (basically a flying passenger vehicle with multiple rotors). Like traditional helicopters, they will be VTOL aircraft – Vertical Takeoff and Landing. Because of their smaller sizes, quiet operation and being non-polluting, many cities are planning to bring these vehicles to the masses in the coming years.
