Then, the popular dilemma rises, what should we do? how can we order a plumber? it’s a known fact that an urgent job will cost much more than a non-urgent job. However, if we’ll wait until tomorrow to fix our problem, we might find ourselves with irreparable damage. Therefore, in this article, we will try to provide guidelines for what to do when a plumbing issue rises.

First Phase - Detect The Problem

We can’t always understand what caused the plumbing issue. Nevertheless, it’s important to try to figure out what’s wrong. The tap is leaking? maybe the rubber band is torn, or maybe the pipes are too old to handle the water. Blockage? A few rounds with the plunger could open it. If not, perhaps an anti-blockage liquid could do the trick. Pour it into the pipes, wait for 15 minutes and wash it with hot water. There are many cases that justify ordering a plumber. However, sometimes healthy logic is the most efficient and cheap solution.

Second Phase - Close The Main Tap

The difference between a $50 repair to $5000 could be time. The longer it takes you to repair your the problem, the bigger the damage is. However, when you are closing the main tap you buy more time. While it’s not convenient to shower at the gym or not washing the dishes, it might be a better option than calling a plumber for an urgent job. However, if you can’t close the main tap, you should call the plumber as fast as possible. Water damage to electric appliances or to a wooden floor could be fatal.

Third Phase - Assess The Damage

One day, a metal plumbing pipe broke and my bathroom was flooded. I have called a plumber and he asked for $700 to come and fix it. I didn’t have $700 so I have closed the main tap and waited for the next day. On the next day, I have hired a plumber for $100. I have saved $600 just because I was patient enough to endure the mild inconvenience. I have noticed what the problem was, closed the main tap and tried to figure out what are my options. After I have received the estimate from the plumber I have assessed the damage and realized it was worthwhile for me to wait. However, if I couldn’t find the main tap, it would have been wiser to call the plumber urgently.

Forth Phase - Calling A Plumber

There is a market failure at estimating how much home improvements jobs should cost. Most of us don’t know how much pipes and working materials cost. Therefore, once the plumber gives us an estimate we hope that he’s a decent human. But, that isn’t always the case. Therefore, we recommend using an app with ratings for the plumbers. While it might be easy to manipulate apps like Yelp, it’s still better than ordering a plumber without any recommendations.

Summary

If you’ll follow these four steps you might save a few hundred dollars on your next plumbing problem. Make sure you detect the problem, close the main tap, assess the damage and if you can’t fix the problem by yourself you should call a plumber.
