Modafinil (Provigil), Armodafinil (Nuvigil), and Amphetamine.

Amphetamine includes Dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine), Methylphenidate (Aptensoi XR, Ritalin, Concerta). Amphetamine and Dextroamphetamine mix (Adderall). For patients who have mild symptoms of drowsiness during the day, the doctor would prescribe any of the first two medications.

These medications help your body system stay awake. Amphetamine is a stronger stimulant for patients who have severe sleepiness during the day. In situations where Modafinil and Armodafinil are not working on the patient, Amphetamine becomes the next treatment option.

These stimulants may cause hormonal contraceptives like birth control pills to fail. This means the patient needs to use another birth control pill which would serve as a backup plan to help them avoid getting pregnant.

Side Effects Of Amphetamine

Irregular heart rhythms, nervousness, shakiness, and sleep disturbance. Patients can easily get addicted to Amphetamine because of the highs that come with it. It might not be ideal for patients who have heart disease or high blood pressure.

Antidepressants

· Serotonin And Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs)
· Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
· Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs).

SNRIs and SSRIs can cause insomnia, digestive issues and even cause patients to gain weight.

TCAs are older drugs with side effects that include constipation, dry mouth, and lightheadedness. Solriamfetol (Sunosi): this medication was approved in 2019 to help treat excessive sleepiness during the day. Its possible side effects include Insomnia, a decrease in appetite, headache, and nausea. It may not be ideal for patients who have heart issues, mental illness, and high blood pressure.

Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB).

These medications cause patients to fall into a deep sleep at night while keeping them more alert during the day. They cannot be mixed with other sedatives, alcohol, or narcotic pain relievers because they can make the patient encounter breathing issues, find themself in a coma, or a worst-case scenario, cause death. These are the two GHB medications that the FDA has approved.

· Sodium oxybate (Xyrem) and Sodium oxybate (Xywav).
· Possible side effects of Sodium oxybate (Xyrem) and Sodium oxybate (Xywav).

These medications both have similar side effects: Sleepwalking, bedwetting, dizziness, or stomach upset. It might not be ideal for patients with kidney issues, heart problems, or high blood pressure. Sodium oxybate (Xyrem) is very high in salt, while sodium oxybate (Xywav) is low in salt.
