In the past, the only way to make your teeth attractive enough to have a nice smile was by getting braces – that bunch of metal ‘hardware’ that would be attached to your teeth. Not pleasant to look at or to wear. Now there is an orthodontic treatment that uses a new technology called aligners. They are made from a hi-tech plastic material that is almost invisible. Better yet, they fit over your teeth – you can remove them. Thus, more pleasant and more comfortable.

How Aligners Work

An orthodontist will examine your teeth and mouth to determine if you are a good candidate for aligners. If you are, 3D molds of your teeth will be made and based on those and your exam, a personalized set of aligners will be made for you. They are plastic like, light weight, transparent and fit over your teeth.

The aligners are designed to move your teeth into proper and optimal positioning over time. You will need to get a new set of aligners about every two weeks, as it is a progressive treatment. When the treatment is completed, you will not have to wear anything and your new smile will be ready.

Conditions That Aligners Can Fix

– Crooked teeth

– Crowded teeth

– Gaps between teeth

– Overbite

– Underbite

Studies have shown that aligners can work for many people, but there seems to be extra effectiveness in people 30 – 50 years old. Also, there seems to be better success with female patients.

Why Aligners Are A Good Treatment Option

– Appearance: Being almost invisible, they are far more desirable than very noticeable metal braces.

– Comfort: They are lightweight and smooth.

– Convenience: As they are self removable, you can easily and more properly brush your teeth – which is also a health benefit.

– Reliability: Aligners are much less likely to break or need repair.

Drawbacks

– Have to be worn for at least 20 – 22 hours per day, which requires being compliant with the treatment requirements.

– Need to remove them every time when eating or drinking (except water).

– Must be worn all night while sleeping

– Can be discomfort when eating, especially hard foods.
