Medical alert devices are small, wearable two-way communication devices, usually worn as a bracelet or necklace. Living Alone

For any person with any kind of impairment or frailty, living alone is perhaps the single biggest reason to have an alert system. This would be also true even if the person has a part time caregiver – because there would still be major blocks of time they would be alone. There are many situations where the person in need of help can’t get to or use their home phone or cell phone. With the wearable alert device, they can summon help wherever they are with the touch of a button.

History or Risk of Falling

As people get older, there is a greater risk of falling, especially if they suffer from mobility problems, dizziness, fainting and other conditions making one prone to falling. When a fall occurs, especially if they can’t get up, the call for help button is right on them to summon help. Better yet, some of these alert devices have built-in sensors – that can detect if the wearer has fallen down, and then will call for help automatically. This is an absolute lifesaver if the person has lost consciousness.

Dementia

Dementia is a debilitating mental condition that can cause confusion, forgetfulness and irrational behaviors. A special concern with dementia patients is that they can get outside and become confused and lost. Some alert devices have built-in GPS capability and sim cards, which allow a caregiver or loved one to track and know the location of the device wearer and for the device to be able to work even when away from the house.

Medications With Side Effects

There are many prescription medicines that can cause adverse and even unexpected side effects, including getting dizzy. If the patient taking these medicines is alone, they may become endangered by these side effects if no one is there to provide assistance. Having an alert device with a falling down sensor can help in this situation.

Loss of Spouse

Losing a spouse is a traumatic and life altering event. If the surviving spouse is now all alone, having an alert device is helpful for peace of mind not only for the device wearer, but also for their loved ones. This is even more relevant if the surviving spouse fits any of the situations described above.
