Independent Living Communities

They are also commonly known as retirement communities and senior apartments. They are designed for healthy active adults over 55, who basically need no assistance in their daily living. However, many of these communities offer maid and laundry service as options. Most of them have shopping and restaurants on the premises or nearby, plus transportation service. The more upscale communities have amenities like a pool, golf, gardens and gyms.

Price range is from $1,400 to $3,500 per month.

Assisted Living

These are designed for seniors who do need some regular assistance in their daily lives, but not the critical type of care found in a nursing home. Typical services include meals, assistance with dressing and grooming, housekeeping and laundry and medical management. Many of these facilities also offer access to on-staff medical personnel, onsite recreational and social activities and health / exercise programs.

Price range is $1,500 to $5,000, based on location, amenities, and if medical or health services are required.

Residential Care Homes

These are also called senior group homes. They are somewhat similar to Assisted Living facilities, but are smaller projects, with a limited number of residents. In most cases, residents live in a semi-private or private room, and not an actual apartment. Meal service is usually provided in a community dining area. Some of these facilities have regular on-site nursing staff to provide medical care and supervision.

Price range is from $1,500 to $4,500 each month.

Alzheimer’s / Dementia Care

These facilities provide specialized care for seniors with dementia and Alzheimer’s. They are usually located in a separate, secured part of an Assisted Living facility or nursing home. The residents can live in apartments, private or semi-private rooms. They participate in structured activities and are given specialized care by staff members specifically trained to care for those with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Price range is from $3,000 to $7,000 per month.
