For many people, varicose veins and spider veins (a common, mild variation of varicose veins) are simply a cosmetic concern that can be addressed with little effort. However, for some folk, varicose veins can cause a dull aching pain and ongoing discomfort. Sometimes varicose veins can lead to more serious problems.
Varicose vein sufferers are turning to cutting-edge treatment that uses injections to relieve their pain and discomfort.
When diagnosing varicose veins, a health care provider might recommend a test called a venous Doppler ultrasound of the leg. A Doppler ultrasound is a noninvasive test that uses sound waves to look at blood flow through the valves in the veins. A leg ultrasound can help detect any blood clots that have formed.
Varicose vein treatment may include self-care measures, compression stockings, surgeries or procedures. Procedures to treat varicose veins are often done as an outpatient procedure, therefore little or no downtime is required. Varicose vein treatment that is not life threatening, is usually performed only to improve the appearance of the legs for cosmetic reasons. For this reason the cost is rarely covered by insurance. There is hope though, a new ground-breaking treatment known as Sclerotherapy is an effective method of eradicating spider and varicose veins. Carry on reading to discover more about Sclerotherapy, the procedure and costs.

For the procedure, patients lay on their backs with their legs slightly elevated. After cleaning the treatment region with alcohol, your doctor will insert a solution into the correct vein using a tiny needle. Typically a liquid, the solution acts by irritating the lining of the vein, causing it to enlarge and block blood flow. Local anesthetic Lidocaine is included in various solutions.
The vein will eventually transform into scar tissue and disappear. Occasionally, particularly when a bigger vein is involved, a foam-based formulation of the fluid may be used. Foam often covers a larger area than liquid. When the needle is inserted into the vein, it might hurt or induce cramping in some individuals. Those experiencing severe discomfort should inform their physician. Typically, the whole procedure takes around an hour to complete.
Once the needle is removed, your doctor will apply pressure and massage the region to prevent blood from entering the injected vessel and to distribute the solution. Your physician may place a compression pad over the injection site to maintain a tight region while moving on to the next vein.
After the surgery, patients may immediately up and stroll about. To prevent the formation of blood clots, you must walk and move your legs. Typically, compression stockings or bandages must be used for around two weeks. This is done to maintain pressure on veins that have been previously treated.
Small varicose veins and spider veins are often treated within three to six weeks. Three to four months may be required for larger veins. However, you may need many treatments to get the desired outcomes. Most veins that improve with therapy do not return, although new veins may appear.
Your doctor will likely schedule a follow-up visit one month following the treatment to see how well it went and if you need more sessions. Usually, seniors must wait around six weeks between sclerotherapy procedures.
Dr. Kassouf at Vein Medic employs sclerotherapy, an injectable therapy, to eliminate varicose veins and spider veins without surgery. It is believed to be the most effective treatment for small-vessel varicose disease, such as spider veins. A sclerosant solution is injected into the damaged vessels during sclerotherapy. This results in the boats closing.
This renders the treated vessel incapable of holding blood, causing it to shrivel and finally disappear. Sclerotherapy is performed in the clinic of Vein Medic. It is a rapid operation that might take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the number and size of spider veins and varicose veins being treated. Approximately one injection is given per inch of spider or varicose veins. There may be anything between five and forty shots administered throughout each therapy session.
Price: Between $200 and $500
High ligation and vein stripping involves tying off a vein before it joins a deep vein and removing the vein through small cuts. This is an outpatient procedure for most people. Removing the vein won’t keep blood from flowing in the leg because veins deeper in the leg take care of the larger volumes of blood.
In ambulatory phlebectomy, a health care provider removes smaller varicose veins through a series of tiny skin punctures. Only the parts of the leg that are being pricked are numbed in this outpatient procedure, scarring and downtime is generally minimal.
