The types of storage units available vary somewhat in each complex, but follow a basic pattern. There are units with access from the outside – like a garage, and there are interior units – like small warehouse bays. All have their own door (usually a roll-up) with its own lock. The sizes of these complexes and individual units also vary. Usually, an outside unit is medium to very large in size and indoor units range from small to large. All of these complexes are usually very well secured, with fencing, security gates and cameras, and even on premises security guards.

There are several reasons to rent and use a self storage unit.

Saving Money

Home prices and rents keep going up, while the size of most homes is going down. Combine this with the fact that people keep accumulating more and more stuff and you have a storage problem. If you have too many things that you just can’t part with and not enough space in your home – renting a local self storage unit will certainly be cheaper than moving or building additional space in your home.

If you are looking to move, you might be able to get a smaller – and thus cheaper – new home if you have another place to store your extra possessions. Usually, the money you save by getting a smaller new home will more than offset the storage unit’s rent.

Convenience

– Storage for things like seasonal sporting equipment, seasonal home maintenance equipment, small boats, motorcycles, excess tools, etc. All this is especially true for people with homes with no basements, attics, or too small garages.

– Converting an existing room to another purpose – like a bedroom into an office, and you don’t want to part with the existing furniture.

– Storage of family heirlooms, antiques, boxes of books and documents, all in one accessible and secured place.

– Storage and access of larger, bulkier items, such as camping equipment or seasonal outdoor furniture.

Security

In addition to anti-theft security, many self storage unit complexes offer additional security and safety features. Many indoor units are climate controlled and have fire suppression systems, protecting your belongings from heat, cold, water and moisture. The complexes also have regular pest control treatments, protecting your things from vermin.

All of these features can make a self storage unit a good place to keep old precious photos or videos, documents, collectibles and heirlooms – usually better than your basement, attic or garage.

Business

While you are not allowed to operate a store or office in a self storage unit, you certainly can use it to store, organize and distribute various kinds of goods and merchandise. This is usually allowed provided the items in question are legal, non-flammable, non-toxic and are not perishable. Not only is this kind of use not ideal from your home, in many locales such business activity out of a home isn’t legal.
