Experts Have Created a Smart Necklace That Can Help Cigarette Smokers Quit The Habit

In Education

Soon, smokers who desire a fashionable approach to stop the addiction could be capable of wearing a smart necklace that monitors their efforts. Northwestern University Innovators have shown a new gadget resembling a lapis blue necklace. It can measure the amount of air smokers take in between puffs. The intention is to encourage smokers to give up cigarettes entirely while lowering their risk of relapsing.

Scientists create a necklace that can sense when someone smokes cigarettes

The SmokeMon necklace tracks each puff using thermal sensor heat signatures. The necklace-like nicotine patch offers smokers less seclusion from inquisitive eyes than a nicotine patch does.

Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine, professor Nabil Alshurafa, said this is far beyond the average number of daily cigarettes. Researchers can determine when the cigarettes get lit when the user puts it to their lips and exhales, the amount they inhale, how long they hold the cigarette, and the time that has passed between puffs.

A smoking topology is produced by the heat signatures that the smart necklace records. In addition, every puff is recorded in a system researchers use to calculate how much carbon monoxide smokers are exposed to. As a result, scientists can better understand the relationship between nicotine absorption and tobacco-related disorders like heart disease, cancer, stroke, and emphysema by charting the prevalence of cigarette smokers. In addition, the necklace may help the smoker in their attempts to quit by demonstrating how their unique smoking topography connects to relapse risk.

Data could show most prone individuals to relapse

The data obtained by the smart necklace could indicate when an individual is most prone to relapse and if it’s appropriate to take action. Then, real-time action would take place. For instance, a health coach could notify you after a particular amount of puffs, urging you to go slowly.

One can learn from mistakes by realizing they weren’t failures; they were only temporary setbacks. Then, they may start refocusing on how they manage their triggers and cope with urges to prevent a relapse.
