On July 20, which is “National Hot Dog Day,” many Americans will likely grill some hot dogs to celebrate. Even though all Americans are fond of hot dogs, the question of whether they are actually a sandwich remains a topic of discussion at backyard barbecues. A recent poll indicates that the answer is yes.

Most Americans consider a hot dog a sandwich

RTA Outdoor Living surveyed 1,000 individuals around the country, and 57% said they considered a hot dog a sandwich. According to Merriam-Webster, a sandwich comprises two bread slices or a sliced roll with stuffing in between. It turns out that Americans equally have this dictionary definition to back them.

Although the pro-sandwich side may be popular now, that could change quickly within a few years. According to the poll, more baby boomers (63.5%) than Gen Zers (50%) consider hot dogs to be sandwiches. Men (60%) are likewise most likely than women (52%) to refer to a hot dog as a sandwich.

According to the poll, there is further disagreement on how to prepare this barbecue staple. A hot dog is best cooked on a grill, according to roughly six out of ten people (56.7%). However, due to their preference for boiling their hot dogs, more than 17% are undoubtedly admirers of New York City’s renowned “dirty water dogs.” Additionally, younger adults between 18 and 23 (27%) use this cooking technique more frequently.

At least one out of eight (12.6%) people believe that microwave-cooking hot dogs is the preferred approach. You’ll have a hard time taking these individuals camping.

The study revealed chicken wings and burgers are equally contentious

Not just hot dogs are a topic of discussion during summertime barbecues. The survey also revealed that attitudes toward burgers and chicken wings could be contentious

While most cheeseburger lovers (84%) believe that the cheese should be placed on the upper side of the patty, 15% disagree. Even though a burger clearly resembles a sandwich more than a hot dog does, a quarter of Americans still disagree.
