The Effect of Digital Amnesia on Individuals

In Education

A recent study revealed that accessing information makes an individual forget crucial or basic information. This revelation is now duped as the Google effect or the digital amnesia. Various publications admitted that possessing an internet platform at your disposal is a privilege.

However, a recent study revealed that although the platform might increase an individual’s rate of intelligence, it also increases the rate of forgetfulness in several individuals. Authors reiterated that the human brain function differently than machines; therefore, most individuals don’t bother putting in the effort. The study further reiterated that individuals would probably remember the item on their search engine rather than the results themselves.

How the study authors conducted their research

The authors carried out three tests on the participants. These tests evaluated the amount of information that each class of people remembers. The first evaluation focused on University students in U.S. Authors asked Participants to recall a certain piece of information, including credit card information.

The participants were allowed to google information. However, none of them could recall most of the information after being asked. The second evaluation focused on Respondents who could not recall the contents of an advertisement after googling it.  The last evaluation focused on Respondents who read blogs. Findings revealed that most of the Respondents only subscribed to blogs that were quickly and readily available.

Esther Kang, one of the leading authors, revealed that human beings are cognitive scrooges, thus preventing any situations requiring them to utilise their cognitive abilities. Kang further stated that possessing information at a person’s disposal reduces the individual’s attention span.

The type of memory issues that individuals possess after the google effect

The evaluations conducted by the study authors revealed the alterations between individuals and the functions of their brains. Other factors being tested during the evaluations included the capability of an individual to carry out tasks while performing mental exercises.

The study authors revealed that Respondents who recalled most of the information spent less time on the internet. For Respondents who access Google rampantly, their capacity to store and record information is very brief compared to the next person. Storing information on electronic devices has thorough consequences compared to using the cognitive capacity efficiently.
