Traditional Indian Medications Could Successfully Treat Type II Diabetes, Study Finds

According to a recent study, traditional Indian remedies can successfully treat type II diabetes. Ayurvedic medications, which are widely used in South Asia, have been found to assist persons with the illness in maintaining blood sugar levels, according to University of Nottingham researchers.

Ayurveda has been in use for centuries

As per the study, these treatments could also aid people in controlling their cholesterol, body weight, and blood pressure. An ancient medical method called Ayurveda has been used for centuries in various South Asian nations, including Nepal and India.

It entails dietary adjustments, purifying and detoxifying therapies, and medications that comprise either separate or combined animal, plant, or mineral constituents. A few of the herbs are also components of medicines used to cure ailments in China, Iran, and Mexico.

The research group did a systematic review of prior studies on the technique in preparation for the research. Results of 199 randomized control studies with 21,191 subjects and 98 Ayurvedic drugs were examined. Results indicate that the disease was successfully treated by conventional treatment.

Patients with type 2 diabetes may benefit from the standard medical approach, according to earlier evaluations. However, many of these assessments did not take into account the results of more recent trials, and none of them included an exhaustive list of all the medications used to treat the condition.

Why choose for conventional treatments?

It is the first “complete” systematic review of any traditional medicine, according to the researchers. Some of the herbal extracts and exclusive Ayurvedic medications examined by the researchers, in the opinion of many Ayurvedic physicians, are seen to deviate from conventional Ayurveda.

Dr. Kaushik Chattopadhyay, the study’s chief author, claims in a university press release that this is the first time a comprehensive analysis has been conducted examining at all these medications on a wider scale.

One of the most common illnesses for which patients utilize Ayurvedic medications is type 2 diabetes, frequently on a long-term basis starting at the time of diagnosis. People frequently employ traditional medicine since it adheres to their cultural norms and pre-existing health views.
