The Possible Connection Between CBD and Sleep

In News

People are facing stressful situations every day. Anything can prove to be a source of stress from relationships, work, politics, responsibilities, and the political climate. Stress in itself can result in not having enough sleep, and this, in turn, becomes a vicious cycle.

55% of Americans experience stress at the workplace, and 8 out of 10 of them will experience stress at some point during the day. This is according to Gallup’s 2019 survey of emotional stress. A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2016 also shows that one out of every three Americans do not get enough sleep every night. People have now devised their own coping mechanisms. A natural solution due to the fact that popping pills is draining and not so healthy.

More and more people are turning to the use of cannabidiol, CBD, a chemical present in hemp. This is a naturally occurring compound derived from Cannabis Sativa. CBD does not intoxicate, unlike THC, which is the most active ingredient in Cannabis. CBD provides a sense of calmness and relaxation. This could be the main reason why stressed individuals opt for it. Cannabis sativa has been used for ages dating back to numerous civilizations. Records have shown its use dating as far back as 2727 B.C. The Chinese royals used to consume it as tea.

A study by four Colorado doctors published in January 2019, Cannabidiol in Anxiety and Sleep: A Large Case Series shows how a group of 72 adults experiencing poor sleep and anxiety was given CBD daily in capsule form. During the initial monthly evaluation, 79.2 percent reported a reduction in anxiousness, and 66.7% of them had improved sleep quality.

According to the World Health Organization Expert Committee on Drug Dependence, CBD has no effects that would cause abuse or dependence. This is, of course, true if the CBD is pure. The FDA has already approved the use of CBD in medication used to treat epilepsy in children, Epidolex. This is the first Cannabis-derived medication that the FDA has approved, and the results are as encouraging since the medication reduces seizures by 25 percent. One can now understand why stressed individuals would want to use the same natural element. There have been no reported lethal overdose cases with CBD, and research shows that it poses a low risk during short term use.
